Top looks at the Met Gala

Quinta Brunson @quintab

If you could drag your eyes away from Doja Cat’s feline nose prosthetic and Lil Nas X’s G-string, there was a wealth of amazingly creative hairdos on show at the recent Met Gala in New York.

A case in point was ‘Abott Elementary’ star and Golden Globe winner, Quinta Brunson, who rocked laid edges that were defined into curls and a sleek bun to end all buns. Said bun comprised of three tiers of poufs made with spiral braids. The do was styled with white dangling leaves.

Amanda Seyfried @mingey

The award for the most amount of hair on the red carpet must surely have gone to ‘Mamma Mia!’ star Amanda Seyfried, who had a mass of pre-Raphelite blonde waves spilling all over.

Phoebe Bridgers @phoebebridgers

Youthful singer/ songwriter Phoebe Bridgers must surely have been a contender for the messiest updo of the night – her hair was dyed gray (a trending shade at the moment) and half-festooned into a bun, with lots of strands framing the face. The look was enhanced by thin black Alice bands.

Burnaboy @burnaboygram

Grammy-winning musician Burnaboy had one of the most intricate styles of the night – ahigh fade paired with a top knot of dreadlocks in a crisscross pattern and embellished with custom metallic clips that had a ‘B’ monogram on them.

FKA Twigs @louissouvestre

British musician FKA Twigs stunned with her hair slicked back and arranged into ribbon loops.

Lilly Collings @lillycollins

‘Emily in Paris’ star Lilly Collins looked beautiful with her retro bob – reminiscent of those seen on 1940s Hollywood actresses. Her locks were styled by @gregoryrussellhair.

Janelle Monae @nikkinelms

For actress and singer Janelle Monae, celebrity stylist Nikki Nelms constructed a towering top knot wrapped in a braid and ribbon.

Halle Bailey @sparkyourhair

‘Little Mermaid’ star Halle Bailey opted for a short, curly chestnut bob, neatly parted and that was half dreadlocks and half hairpiece.

Cardi B @iamcardib

Rapper Cardi B’s look was worthy of notice because it was so over the top and almost comic-book like – along grey bouffant wig complete with Alice band.

‘Don’t Worry Darling’ star Florence Pugh has been rocking ultra-sculptural blonde dos on the carpet of late, so her Met Gala Look was startling in contrast – adark buzz cut worn under a skyscraper feathered head dress.

Micro bangs were definitely a trend on the red carpet as most notably seen on model Emily Ratajkowski, R&B star Lizzo, singer/ songwriter Olivia Rodrigo and British actress Lilly James.

Rainbow hair trend spotted at Coachella

Alesandra Ambrosio @dimitrishair

As famous as Coachella is for music acts, it’s also a prime showcase for celebs and ‘it girls’ to strut their festival style.

Brazilian supermodel Alessandra Ambrosio had arguably the prettiest hair of the fest, which was held recently in California, with her high pony tail cascading into a fountain of different shades, designed by Dimitris Giannetos.

Saweetie @thejesjewel

Also going the supercolourful route was rapper Saweetie, whose long tresses had all manner of rainbowesque shades hand painted on it.

Hailey Bieber @hayleybieber

Model Hayley Bieber sported a blunt cut bob, centre-parted, tucked behind the ears and flipped out at the edges.

Ciara @ciara

Singer Ciara rocked a plethora of faded My Little Pony pastels running through her long mermaid-styled hair.

Shay Mitchell @alyxliu

Stylist Alyx Liu designed a super-glam look for actress Shay Mitchell – aslicked back high pony tail constained by ‘the hairtie’ from Utiles Beauty and then exploding into a mass of lovely curls.

Latina songstress Becky G had a single deep blue braid running down each side of her long dark extensions, to match her denim blue outfit.

Dixie D’Amelio @dimitrishair

For singer and social media personality, Dixie D’Amelio, Giannetos created striking graphic black lines in her gelled blonde fringe.

Best hair at the Latin American Music Awards

Becky G @iambeckyg

Latina songstress of the moment, Becky G, rocked a Pamela Andersonesque messy updo created by celebrity stylist Glen Oropeza (@ glencocoforhair) at the recent Latin American Music Awards in Las Vegas

Chicquis @chicquis

The hairdo seen on Chiquis was a top knot with fulsome bangs and shoulder-length strands framing the face.

Angela Aguilar @angela_aguilar

An aggressive bob that looked a bit like a pudding bowl haircut, strangely worked well on Angela Aguilar. Strangely as it’s not the most flattering style in the world.

Roselyn Sánchez @roselyn_sanchez

Star of ‘Fantasy Island’ and ‘‘Devious Maids’, Roselyn Sánchez, looked stunning in a tightly pulled back pony tail.

Chesca @chesca

Chesca chose to wear her long hair dead straight and in a pastel hue, which contrasted sharply with the very dark and extreme sunglasses.

Patricia Manterola @patriciamanterola

The long, raven coloured tresses of Patricia Manterola were coaxed into tidy twists, subtly accented by a few thin braids here and there.

Honoree and legendary songstress, Christina Aguilera slayed the GLAAD Media Awards red carpet in Los Angeles recently with waist-length platinum blonde extensions clipped high behind one ear.

The GLAAD Media Award is an accolade bestowed by GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) to recognise and honor various branches of the media for their outstanding representations of the LGBT community and the issues that affect their lives.

Jeremy Pope @jeremypope

One of the more striking looks of the night was seen on actor Jeremy Pope, whose copper-streaked, boblength dreadlocks were half swept into an updo, with the remainder flopping over one eye.

Jamie Clayton @msjamieclayton

A very pretty and flattering style was seen on Jamie Clayton. It comprised of a cacophony of sculpted, cascading waves that were fastened on one side by a huge butterfly-like bow made from the same fabric as her dress.

Lisa Ann Walter @lisannwalter

Actress Lisa Ann Walter opted to wear her trademark long auburn hair in a very glamourous updo, with a long fringe in an extreme side-parting.

Sarah Michelle Gellar @sarahmgellar

‘Cruel Intentions’ star, Sarah Michelle Gellar, wore her blonde locks in a blunt cut long bob that was parted in the centre and tucked behind the ears for a somewhat severe look. Talking of severe, fellow actress Raven-Symoné rocked a silver buzz cut.

Sinitta

Former Miss America and established actress, Vanessa Williams, wore her caramel blonde hair in an updo with a side-swept fringe, while Sinitta went the casual route. The British singer’s beyond-shoulder-length hair was styled into slightly messy tight waves.

SA’s hair care market to grow 5.84% in next 5 years

The growing natural hair movement in South Africa is a contributing factor in the region’s rapidly expanding hair care market.

Furthermore, demand for products that help prevent damage, as well curl control and frizz control treatments, is increasing due to unique hair types in the country.

So says new a new report from mordorintelligence.com, which predicts the market will grow at a CGAR of 5.84% in the next half decade. The study points out that the natural hair movement has created awareness among female consumers and supported the sales of herbal hair care products, especially shampoos and conditioners, in the country. There is increased awareness among consumers of the damage caused by chemicals such as sulfates and parabens, which are often be used in hair care products. As a result, more consumers are now looking for clean brands that use natural and organic ingredients.

As the mordorintelligence. com report states, South African consumers are also wanting more variety in their hair care products, ranging from braids to weaves, to chemical treatments, to other drastic style changes. Dry shampoos are expected to revolutionise the hair care industry.

Moreover, shampoos that claim functional benefits, such as antipollution, hair growth, dandrufffree, and organically certified, are gaining popularity in the market.

Young people in the country are more inclined towards using hair colours and other hair styling products. As a result, key players are investing in product development in growing application areas, such as innovative hair styling and intensive conditioner products.

Some popular product concepts include sulfate-free shampoos, co-wash products, cleansing conditioners, replenishing masks, oils, creams, scalp care balms, and many more.

In recent years, the hair care products market has transformed in South Africa due to several acquisitions and mergers, proving the growing importance of the ethnic consumer. In February 2021, Revlon Inc. partnered with MDR brand management to create a brand expansion strategy that takes it into new spaces and drives deeper consumer engagement across the Middle East and Africa region. New trending shade – candlelit brunette

Inspired by the delicate glow of candlelight, this shade sets out to emulate the warmth and beauty of dark hair in a soft, romantic light.

So says Conor James Doyle of Conor James Education in an article published on hji.co.uk. He continues: “Think dark, soft tumbling waves backlit by the ambience of a charming Italian restaurant. Luxurious, sultry, understated but captivating.

“For the first time we are seeing brunettes facing their phobias of the dreaded red hue and opting for these copper/mahogany-based tones. The candlelit brunette is lighted very softly only 1-2 levels in areas with no real focal points, then draped in rich tones to enhance the underlying warmth.”

Jake Nugent, OSMO Ambassador adds: “Adding just a few softer highlights to naturally dark hair can give clients that desired soft look. It’s just like a balayage, except less is more.

“The best colour technique is to pepper mini face framing babylights throughout the hair, whilst maintaining the dark panelling. This will break up the brunette and create a natural, luxurious, and effortless look. Lowvolume/ammonia-free clay bleach will be your best friend here.”
