At the time of writing, the cold weather had well and truly set in and all I can say is yikes! Anyway, for that reason we have included in this issue of Salon International, a pictorial guide to some popular protective styles for Afro-textured hair, compiled by a leading hair care supplier. Protective styles are so-called because the natural hair is purposely tucked away with minimum manipulation to protect it from the potentially harmful effects of the weather, as in low temperatures and dry air. As you will see, these styles give the hairdresser free range to be amazingly artistic and creative.

With such an emphasis on social media marketing and having to be Instagram- and Facebook-ready at all times, there is always a great opportunity, unfortunately, for being subject to online bullying. No wonder those who make nasty comments on the internet are called trolls and it’s a pity they can’t find better ways to amuse themselves. In this issue we include an interesting article by a salon owner who has been subjected to online trolling and how she has dealt with it.

We decided to catch up with Raeesa Dawood, who won our inaugural Salon International Award for Up & Coming Hairdresser of the Year 2020 to see how her career has progressed since then. She now has her own thriving salon that also offers nail and beauty services. Quite the success story!

Enjoy the read!
