Gary Rom Cover Look Awards celebrate stylists and apprentices

Approximately 60 participants in each of the two categories of the Gary Rom Hairdressing Cover Look Awards vied for top honours at the 2022 event, held late last year in Pretoria.

Felicia Booysen walked away with the Stylist award, with Timone Visser winning the Apprentice category. Prizes were sponsored by Schwarzkopf Professional and ghd.

The Gary Rom Hairdressing Cover Look was introduced in 2015 and is open only to those who work within the Gary Rom franchise. Originally launched as a biennial event, it did not take place in 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Says Gary Rom: “My motivation for this awards initiative was to create an internal competition that would inspire creativity, a feeling of belonging, and a sense of purpose in our teams.

“I have always placed a lot emphasis on apprentices in this competition as apprentices are the future of the brand. If we nurture them and place as much emphasis and importance on them as we do our stylists, the future of the Gary Rom Hairdressing brand will be secured.”

The preliminary rounds of the competition were judged on professional photographs that were taken and submitted. Independent judges chose the top 10 in each category to participate in the finals, where stylists and apprentices were able to display their creativity on models in a live competition on awards night.

The normally blonde Kaley Cuoco, nominated for ‘The Flight Attendant’, debuted a chocolate brown colour, styled into a towering updo with a face framing parted fringe.

What went down at the People’s Choice Awards

Regarded as Hollywood’s major pop culture event of the year, The People's Choice Awards recognises people in entertainment and is voted online by the general public and fans, with the 48th edition held on 6 Dec 2022 in Santa Monica, California.

Hip hop star and body diversity advocate, Lizzo, who won the People’s Champion Award, rocked a towering Mohican style Afro, held together with ornate hairclips and featuring laid edges, which really took the red carpet by storm.

Trans actress MJ (Michaela Jaé) Rodriguez had a messy updo, with soft curls. Actress and director of ‘Don’t Worry Darling’ (which scooped the award for The Drama Movie of 2022) had very casual long tresses and a barely-there ‘revenge dress’, having recently broken up with pop idol, Harry Styles, who also stars in the film.

Sporting a similar style, although with darker, thicker locks, was ‘Modern Family’ star, Sarah Hyland, whose dress was also fairly skimpy. ‘Law and Order SVU’ alum and one of the evening’s winners, Mariska Hargitay, also opted for long, casual locks.

In fact, subtle variations of this look were favoured by several other stars on the red carpet, though mostly in blonde hues, such as seen on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ star, Ellen Pompeo, comedian Nikki Glaser, actress Sarah Michelle Geller, country star Carrie Underwood and ‘Real Housewives of Beverley Hills’ star, Dorit Kemsley.

Fellow ‘Housewives’ star and actress, Lisa Rinna, had her usual iconic short shag swept up and teased for a rather severe look.

Social media star Tinx sported a glam bun, with long strands framing each side of her face. Winner of the Music Icon award, country star Shania Twain’s hair was pale pink and worn under an animal print hood, referencing what she wore decades ago for her hit song, ‘That don’t impress me much’.

Laverne Cox always makes a statement on the red carpet and this time had a lovely half updo in ash blonde highlights and a long parted fringe framing her face. ‘Selling Sunset’ star, Chrishell Stause, had a fulsome top knot with even longer strands framing her face. Stause’s castmate, Lazkani, went for full-on, classic Hollywood glam and looked fabulous with her tawny structured waves flowing on one side, with the other side tucked behind the ear.

Comedian Pretty Vee had one of the more unusual top knots of the night, which towered above her head and was accentuated by an interesting V-shaped parting, as befitting her name.

Actress Tefi Pessoa definitely had the longest hair of the night, with her long, black braid literally reaching her ankles.

Supermodel, TV presenter and businesswoman, Heidi Klum, wore the standard ‘Heidi Klum hairstyle, as in long, straight blonde hair with fulsome eyelash-skimming bangs, although her hair was barely noticeable due to one of the most bizarre outfits of the night.

Actress Selma Blair rocked the appealing blonde pixie cut she has been wearing of late, while singer Gayle had a half-half style – with 50% of her long, centre-parted hair black, and the remaining 50% in a rich chestnut hue. This style channeled Cruella De Ville.
