New Collective Agreement valid until 31 December 2025

The Employers’ Organisation for Hairdressing, Cosmetology and Beauty (EOHCB) entered into substantive negotiations with UASA The Union and both parties have finalised a new Collective Agreement.

This became effective as from 1 June 2023 and will run until the end of December 2025. Salon owners are urged to read the prescribed basic conditions of employment applicable to the Hairdressing, Cosmetology, Beauty and Skincare Industry under the Resources tab on the EOHCB website (www.eohcb.co.za).

These conditions form part of the Collective Agreement of the National Bargaining Council for Hairdressing, Cosmetology, Beauty and Skincare Industry.

Among the conditions are the prescribed Salary/Age Increases as follows:

Applicable Nationally (Area A, B, C, & D)

2023: 1 June 2023 – 31 December 2023 – 7%

2024: 1 January 2024 – 31 December 2024 – 6%

2025: 1 January 2025 – 31 December 2025 – 6%

Should it happen that in years 2024 or 2025 the increase of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) is 2% more than 6%, or, 2% less than 6%, the parties will renegotiate the percentage increase in question.

As per the EOHCB, employers are advised to refer to the updated salary/wage schedules to be provided by the National Bargaining Council for Hairdressing, Cosmetology, Beauty, and Skincare Industry via their website – www.hcsbc.co.za – to effectively adjust salaries/ wages and make deductions as of the June 2023 payroll.

One of the other conditions in the Collective Agreement refers to Annual Leave as follows:

Applicable Nationally (Area A, B, C, & D)

An employer must grant annual leave equal to the number of days the employee would have been entitled to within a two-week period, not later than six months after the annual leave cycle.

Should there be any leave days outstanding after this period it must be paid to the employee by agreement between the parties.

Should the employee refuse to take annual leave when instructed by the employer, the leave will be forfeited six months after the leave cycle.

Hairdos that took centre stage at the Tony Awards

Report by Natasha Chisese and Joanna Sterkowicz

LaChanze @mslachanze

Actress, singer, dancer and Tony Award winner, LaChanze, probably had one of the most eye-popping styles of the night. It comprised of sleek Afro puff buns arranged into a high ponytail, with embellishments dotted here and there.

Betsy Wolfe @bwolfepack

Actress, singer and entrepreneur, Betsy Wolfe, went the mermaid-core route, with long, wavy flowing blonde locks over an Ariel-style gown.

J Harrison Ghee @iheartradiobroadway and jharrisonghee

New York’s Broadway theatre fraternity turned out in force and in style for the recent Tony Awards.

J Harrison Ghee, the first non-binary actor to ever win a Tony Award, had one of the most standout (literally!) looks of the night, with a style that somewhat channeled Grace Jones circa the 1980s. Ghee’s flat top Afro had a side fringe and buzz cut sides.

Rebecca Wisocky @coreytuttlehair

Known to TV viewers from ‘Ghosts’ and ‘Devious Maids’, actress Rebecca Wisocky had her signature auburn Pre-Raphelite curls coaxed gently back into an updo to highlight her strong bone structure.

Ariana DeBose @joannavargasnyc

‘West Side Story’ star and Oscar winner, Ariana DeBose, had long dark tresses becomingly clipped back behind the ears and left to cascade down her back.

Lea Michele @leamichele

Stage and TV star Lea Michele of ‘Glee’ fame was a case book study of an elegant lob that was flipped under and emanated from a deep side parting.

Rachel Brosnahan @joannavargasnyc

Rachel Brosnahan, star of ‘Mrs Maisel’, totally rocked a ballerina bun, with scraped back hair and said bun perched high on the back of her head.

Annaleigh Ashford @timmnolan

Award-winning actress, singer and dancer, Annaleigh Ashford, had her long blonde, multi-toned hair in S-waves, tucked back behind one ear and flowing freely on the other side of her face.

Latest on trend colour – tiramisu

While the candlelit brunette colour that we reported on some months back is likely to remain popular this year, tiramisu hair is trending strongly.

But, what exactly is tiramisu hair? Like the traditional coffee-flavoured tiramisu pudding, which consists of different layers, tiramisu hair is created using three shades of brunette.

Jake Nugent, hair colour expert and OSMO Ambassador, is quoted in an article on hji.co.uk as saying: “I think 2023 is more about low maintenance and subtle tonal changes and tiramisu is a lower-maintenance take on traditional colouring.

“It is a trend that consists of three different shades of brown: a warm, tan shade with a yellow undertone, a deep warm brown, and a light brown with a more gold reflect.

@tiramisu_hairclubccc

“Furthermore, tiramisu hair features a shadowed root or a root smudge, where the highlights are lightly painted over with a shade closer to your client’s natural hue. This creates a very natural blend of dark and light, and ends up looking natural as well as being extremely low maintenance.”

Nugent advises stylists to encourage their clients to use hair masks at least once or twice a week to ensure that their hair stays looking healthy.

Scalp facials set to trend

IMAGE: SHUTTERSTOCK

The desire among clients to achieve a healthy, rejuvenated scalp and awareness of its positive impact on hair is predicted to rise in popularity this year.

An article in hji.co.uk describes scalp care as ‘the new skincare’ with benefits like accelerated hair growth, improved thickness, removal of build-up, toxins and excess oils, improved circulation, and boosting cell turnover.

Says Andrew Jose, editorial ambassador for Revlon Professional: “Certain scalp conditions can result in breakage and even hair loss, so it’s vital to take the signs – like redness, irritations and itchiness – seriously, and to invest in a routine.”

According to Mark Blake, Nioxin trichologist, most clients care very little about their scalp and spend little on it. “Then they wonder why their hair isn’t in good condition. Likening a scalp care regime to skincare is a way to start the conversation around scalp health.”

Even small salons are seeing an increase in demand for scalp facials. “Originating in Japan and used in Indian Ayurveda, scalp facials have become more mainstream in the beauty sector which has seen wonderful results,” explains Abigail Butler for L’Oréal Professionnel Paris. “A modern take on the normal ‘facial’, this service focuses solely on the scalp – cleansing, exfoliation, and moisturising, all with the condition of the scalp at the forefront of the ultimate hair vision,” explains Joana Neves, of ALTERNA Europe.

Blake explains that a scalp facial cleanses by removing debris that can clog the scalp. “They act as vasodilators, helping the blood vessels in the scalp nourish, regenerate and revitalise. The scalp has its own microbiome, and disruption to this may cause scaling and other sensitivities, plus a blocked follicle limits hair’s ability to grow.”

It’s important to understand the condition of the scalp before making any recommendations and customising a scalp facial for the client.

Do’s that wowed at the BET Awards

Report by Natasha Chisese and Joanna Sterkowicz

Ravyn Lenae @ravynlenae

Hands down the style that totally slayed the red carpet at the recent BET Awards in Los Angeles was seen on R&B singer/songwriter Ravyn Lenae, whose cherry cola coloured dreadlocks were arranged in a pretzel styled half updo. This imaginative creation was a collaboration between @malcolm.marquez and @ ambitiouscurl.

Hosted by the Black Entertainment Television network, the BET Awards is an annual event held to celebrate black entertainers and other minorities in music, film, sports and philanthropy.

JT @hairassasin

Going for all-out, old style Hollywood glam was actress and composer, JT, with long, cascading curls, festooned by a pretty chiffon bow serving as an Alice band.

Victoria Monét @victoriamoney

Songwriter and singer Victoria Monét had her ombre blonde hair styled by @iamdavontae, with goddess braids by @brysonkarter to effect a mermaidcore look.

Akira Akbar @akira_akbar

Actress and model Akira Akbar was all about elegance – an impeccably groomed blunt cut lob with middle parting perfectly complimented her pretty gown.

Muni Long @munilong

Going for a more staid style was musician Muni Long, who looked beautiful with long tight curls parted in the centre.

Doechii @doechii

Singer and rapper Doechii chose to wear a super short pixie style, razor cut and brushed forward, a look that almost channeled Halle Berry circa the 1990s.

Bonnie Mbuli @bonniembuli

Iconic South African actress Bonnie Mbuli graced the BET red carpet in a spectacular pink gown and brush cut natural hair.

Ice Spice @icespice

Rapper Ice Spice certainly had one of the most interesting colours of the night – her long straight ginger locks skimmed her waist, with gelled edges at the temples.

Coco Jones @jaystayready

Styled by @jaystayready, Coco Jones rocked a very smart updo with two long wisps on either side of the face.

Uncle Waffles @unclewaffles

The strangely named DJ, Uncle Waffles, rocked a sophisticated low chignon, with a deep curved side part and gelled edges around the ears for a new take on a traditional style.

Bright blue hair and cheek-length bangs – it all happened on the Cannes red carpet

Fabulous films, even more fabulous stars, and a smorgasbord of high end hair styling characterised the red carpet at the recent Cannes Film Festival.

Helen Mirren @helenmirren

1 One look that ricocheted around the internet was Dame Helen Mirren’s blue updo, coaxed into what looked a bit like a bird’s nest style, studiously messy as it was. While the blue hue certainly suited the legendary actress and was a perfect match for her gown, it also represented a trending colour wash from the L’Oréal Paris brand, of which Mirren is an ambassador.

Dua Lipa @dualipa

2 British signer and Donatella Versace collaborator, Dua Lipa, smouldered under the longest set of bangs seen in Cannes – the gelled fringe hung over the eyes and deep onto her cheeks, offset by a flattering updo.

Chinese actress Fan Bingbing had a fabulous Mikado-like chignon that was so amazingly styled that it looked like an ear length bob from the front.

Viola Davis @violadavis

3 Oscar winner Viola Davis channelled regal vibes with her crown-like, 1980s inspired Afro.

The Cannes red carpet always seems to be festooned with models, possibly to up the glamour stakes, and this year was no exception with an endless procession of runway regulars. like an ear length bob from the front.

Winnie Harlow @winnieharlow

4 Canadian supermodel Winnie Harlow’s hair was aggressively side-swept into a low and stylish bun, planted behind the right ear.

Gigi Hadid @gigihadid

5 Fellow supermodel Gigi Hadid sported the ultimate in Californiastyle, beachy blonde waves.

Sabrina Elba @sabrinaelba

6 Not a look recommended for most people and yet it looked fabulous on model Sabrina Elba – apudding-bowl thick fringe leading into a chignon.

Grace Elizabeth @sashahere

7 Another model, Grace Elizabeth, sported a short retro style designed by Aleksandra Sasha Nesterchuk (@sashahere). The boyish cut was made feminine by all manner of pretty curls on top.
